WHERE YOUR DOLLARS GO
100% of the money you raise by running Have a Heart in your school goes towards youth-related HIV/AIDS research. For example, proceeds from the Have a Heart program funded important projects such as the one below.
Researcher: Dr. Sean Ari Bitnun
Co-Investigators: Dr. Stanley Read, Dr. Jason Brophy
Institution: Hospital for Sick Children
Project: Effect of Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplementation on Hypertriglyceridemeia in HIV-infected Children taking Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART): A Randomized Cross-Over Study
Growing up is tough enough; it's even tougher when you’ve got HIV. That’s why every dollar raised through CANFAR’s Have a Heart campaign goes to funding children and youth focused HIV/AIDS research projects in Canada. This year, proceeds raised will fund research currently being conducted at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
Dr. Stanley Read and Dr. Jason Brophy are studying the benefits of using Omega-3 fatty acid supplements to treat a condition known as hypertriglyceridemia in HIV infected children. Hypertriglyceridemia is a serious condition which can lead to cardiovascular disease and is often found in children and adults living with HIV who are being treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy. By funding this important research CANFAR will be able to help kids with HIV live longer and healthier lives.
