THE HEART AWARD
The Heart Award is presented annually to the high school that demonstrates outstanding dedication and community spirit while raising research funds and HIV/AIDS awareness among their peers.
2010 Heart Award was awarded to Random Island Academy of Clarenville, Newfoundland, for their outstanding participation in the Have a Heart Program. Students ran a week-long fundraising and awareness campaign with activities including: grilled cheese sandwiches, heart-o-grams sales, a fundraising competition between teachers resulting in one of them dressing up for an entire day of school (picture below) and having a community nurse speak to senior high school students about HIV/AIDS.
Guidance councilor, Susan Wiseman, led the team of students and helped engage the community by sending a letter to parents to involve them in the campaign. The students at Random Island Academy demonstrated enthusiasm, community spirit and innovation while bringing HIV/AIDS to the forefront by dispelling myths and educating their peers.

OCAD Poster Sponsorship
Every year, CANFAR provides schools with a choice of posters to support and help promote their Have a Heart program. The variety reflects the reality that different schools, with different age groups and demographics, have varying needs for HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness.
For the 2010 Have a Heart campaign, CANFAR once again worked with the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD). This year over 25 design students submitted creative entries that spoke to the mission of the program: to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS within school communities.
The winning designs, as determined by CANFAR staff, in conjunction with high school focus groups, are used for the in-school Have a Heart program posters.
Below you will see the winning students fro the 2011 campaign, the final designs will be available in the fall of 2010.

All posters are produced in both English and French.
