CANFAR, the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research, recognizes that you are concerned about the privacy and security of your personal information. At CANFAR, we are committed to providing protection for your personal information. CANFAR adheres to the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Canada's national privacy legislation.
CANFAR takes every step to ensure the confidentiality of your information is maintained.
What does CANFAR use your personal information for? CANFAR collects personal information to provide customized service to you. As a CANFAR supporter you may receive:

- Supporter notices
- Special event invitations
- Volunteer opportunities
How will CANFAR use your personal information? Periodically, CANFAR may utilize your name, address, phone number or your e-mail address for internal solicitation and list exchange purposes or provide it to external companies that we have entered into a partnership / confidentiality agreement in order to provide value added services.

From time to time, CANFAR may share your information with like-minded organizations. Your name will not be shared until you have had an opportunity to decline. This is re-checked regularly, and donors can opt out at any time.
Leadership donors may be publicly recognized by CANFAR in our newsletter, The Catalyst, on our website, www.CANFAR.com, or through other vehicles. If you prefer to remain anonymous, please indicate this when making your gift or pledge, in the box provided for this purpose, or contact us directly to inform us of your wishes.
Who may have access to your personal information? Strict controls are maintained over access to personal information you share with CANFAR. Access will only be granted as outlined in this document.
Would CANFAR disclose your personal information to anyone else? Personal information will not be disclosed for purposes other than those for which it was collected, except with the consent of the individual or as required by law. CANFAR will never willfully disclose individually identifiable information about members or users to a third party if the donor has requested otherwise.
How does CANFAR ensure privacy for personal information collected on the CANFAR website (www.CANFAR.com)? CANFAR only collects personal information on the CANFAR website through subscriptions to the newsletter or when a user selects TELL ME MORE. This information is collected and stored through a secure portal.
CANFAR collects personal and financial information through online donations which are processed securely through a third party, Artez.
Links to third parties? Our website may contain links to other websites. Upon entering other sites, you are subject to the privacy and security policies of these sites. This policy identifies the privacy practices of CANFAR's website only.

Who does the policy apply to? This policy covers all personal information related to donors, prospective donors, grant applicants and volunteers, which is under control of CANFAR, regardless of the format in which the information is held. The policy also applies to all CANFAR staff and individuals associated with CANFAR including students, volunteers, board members and third parties. (authorized associates)
How does this policy adhere to industry standards? We have taken measures to ensure your personal information is strictly protected. CANFAR's Privacy Protection Policy complements our existing privacy practices and aligns CANFAR with the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act which took effect in the charitable sector on January 1st, 2004. This Policy is posted on our website at www.CANFAR.com. As a CANFAR supporter, you may receive periodic mail, e-mail, or telephone contacts to keep you informed about CANFAR activities, granting and awareness programs, and upcoming events and promotions. Occasionally, we may also trade our mailing list with other like-minded charities for a one-time exchange. CANFAR's Privacy Policy is based on the ten principles outlined by PIPEDA and are as follows:
- Accountability
- The Executive Director is accountable for CANFAR's compliance with this policy and is the authority on information and security matters. In addition, all staff and volunteers have a responsibility to ensure that personal information is protected at all times in accordance with the Privacy Policy.
- Identifying Purposes
- CANFAR collects information for the following purposes: processing donations, keeping donors informed about CANFAR events and activities, to evaluate grant applications and administer such awards, exchanging lists with like-minded organizations.
- Individuals collecting personal information on behalf of CANFAR will be able to identify the purpose for which the information is being collected. If personal information is to be used for a purpose previously unknown to the individual, CANFAR will identify this purpose prior to use and will provide individuals with an opt-out option.
- Consent
- Consent is required from the individual for the collection, use, or disclosure of personal information.
- CANFAR will make reasonable efforts to ensure that individuals are advised orally or in writing of the purposes for the collection use and disclosure of personal information.
- CANFAR will seek consent to use and disclose personal information at the time it is collected. However, CANFAR may seek consent to use and disclose the information after it has been obtained, but before it is used for a new purpose.
- In general, the receipt of a donation by CANFAR constitutes implied consent for CANFAR to collect, use and disclose personal information for all identified purposes.
- A donor may withdraw consent at any time by contacting CANFAR.
- Limiting Collection
- Collection of personal information shall be limited to that which is necessary for the purposes identified by the CANFAR.
- CANFAR will collect information by fair and lawful means.
- Limiting Use, Disclosure, and Retention
- CANFAR will not use personal information for any other purpose except that for which it was gathered without consent.
- Only CANFAR employees or authorized associates will be granted access to personal donor information.
- Accuracy
- Personal information will be accurate, complete and up-to-date for the identified purposes for which it is to be used.
- CANFAR will update personal information about its donors when necessary to fulfill the identified purposes or upon notification from the individual.
- Safeguards
- CANFAR will ensure that all personal information shall be protected by appropriate security safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information.
- CANFAR will protect personal information disclosed to third parties by contractual agreements stipulating the confidentiality of the information and the purposes for which it is to be used.
- All CANFAR employees or authorized associates with access to personal information will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement and receive privacy training.
- Openness
- CANFAR privacy policies and practices will be readily available to individuals in multiple formats.
- Individual Access
- All CANFAR donors and individuals will be given access to their personal information upon request. Individuals will be able to challenge the accuracy of the information and have it amended as appropriate.
- Challenging Compliance
- CANFAR shall maintain procedures for addressing and responding to inquires or complaints from individuals about CANFAR's handling of personal information. CANFAR will inform donors of these procedures.
